FA Cup: Liverpool take advantage of Arsenal’s mistakes and progress to FA Cup fourth round

Arsenal‘s problems are mounting. The ‘Gunners’ once again drew a blank as they crashed out of the FA Cup.

Liverpool took advantage of Arsenal‘s mistakes in the penalty area to secure a 2-0 victory at the Emirates in the third round of the FA Cup.

Arteta‘s side have gone out of all the domestic Cups and the defeats over the winter period are piling up.

For Liverpool, their fortunes have been the complete opposite. They are alive on all fronts. Leaders in the Premier League, in the last 16 of the Europa League and in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

All after a match in which they were without several of their stars (Van Dijk, Szoboszlai, Salah…). In their first match without the Egyptian, who is already focused on the Africa Cup of Nations, Klopp‘s side did not fail.

They withstood the first-half barrage from an Arsenal side with continued problems in front of goal.

Havertz was guilty of missing chances and Odegaard hit the crossbar. Saka was also off target. Alisson made five commendable saves (the best from White’s volley) from an Arsenal side that has been toothless in recent games.

They have scored one goal in the last three games. This is simply unsustainable for a team trying to win the title.

Liverpool are firing on all cylinders

The opposite is true of a Liverpool side who, when the Gunners went down in the second half, turned on the style.

Alexander-Arnold and Jota hit the woodwork and Ramsdale had to perform a ‘miracle’ save from Luis Diaz. However, the English goalkeeper was unable to prevent the 0-1 scoreline.

Alexander-Arnold put a ball into the box and Kiwior was in a positional mess. He inadvertently knocked the ball into his own net.

Arsenal went forward but generated no danger and Luis Diaz, on the counter, sealed the tie and Liverpool’s passage to the next round of the FA Cup. Arteta’s side have now lost three in a row in all competitions.

One win in seven. The Spanish coach will be hoping for January reinforcements to steady the ship.
